What is your role at EPC?
I work as part of the allied health team at EPC as a music therapist. My role is to support clients, carers and families (children as well) wellbeing using music to help improve quality of life and within bereavement support.
How does music help with clients and their families?
We do a lot of things in music therapy to support clients. A lot of the time particularly in palliative care we play live music which is important to those who we are going to see. We find that even if you are not well or you have a lot of pain and anxiety it doesn’t take a lot of energy to listen. Listening to familiar music can bring up a lot of memories and provide comfort and reconnect you with your identity and what was important in your life.
Why did you pursue this role/career?
When I was in year 10 I saw news piece of the music therapy program at Royal Children’s hospital in Melbourne and thoughts that’s what I want to do. I then applied to specialise in music therapy once at the University of Melbourne.
