Introduction To Palliative Care For Registered Nurses (Div 1 & 2)
This course – relevant to all care settings – provides Division 1 and Division 2 RNs with an introduction to palliative care. It explores the comprehensive needs of the dying and their families and gives an overview of some common issues that confront professional carers on a day-to-day basis when caring for the terminally ill. Sessions are run 1 day each week across 3 consecutive weeks with Day 4 being a scheduled observation day in the following 2 weeks. Topics include the following:
Day 1 & 2 (mandatory)
- Principles of Palliative Care
- Gastrointestinal Symptoms
- Principles of Symptom Assessment and Management
- Respiratory Symptoms
- Pain Assessment & Management
- Nutrition & Hydration
- Dying Process & End of Life Care
- Spiritual Care
- Grief and Bereavement (including Self Care)
- Communication / Difficult Conversations
Day 3 (optional)
- Malignant Wounds
- Palliative Care Emergencies
- Syringe Drivers (not competency based)
- Dementia
- Advance Care Planning
Day 4 (optional)
Optional day on the road Observing Capacity of Grade 3 nurse visiting clients in the home.

Option 1 - Days 1 & 2:
$420 per person incl GST
Option 2 - Days 1, 2 & 3:
$610 per person incl GST
Option 3 - Days 1-4:
$750 per person incl GST
You are supplied with:
- Course material is provided prior Day 1 to stimulate thinking and encourage useful discussion which will enrich the participant’s learning experience.
- 1 point per hour towards yearly CPD requirements
- A certificate of attendance is presented to each attendee on completion of the course
